Annual Event 2015
‘Citizenship’ and civic participation in a digital age are increasingly contentious and proliferating terms. Often we are asked to think about everyday use of digital technologies as ‘civic’ or retrospectively claim civic issues from widespread and heterogeneous use of digital technologies. In a digital culture era, citizenship may simply mean ’empowerment’, ‘participation’ or ‘voice’, introducing a new set of histories and values with each iteration. The annual event of the Communities and Culture Network+ is engaging with issues of citizenship in all its forms to ask questions not only about who or what claims of citizenship are for, but also about the potential utility, role and responsibilities of digital technology in framing or conditioning new and existing modes of civic engagement.
